Hair gods wielding chrome hair tools like warriors with swords, supermodels clustered backstage for a selfie. Strike a pose! It must be Fashion Week…
Each new season ushers in wild and wonderful hair designed to showcase a designer’s vision of what’s so hot right now. From good-girl sleek texture as smooth as glass to the radical silhouette of feather cut shags, here are the 2016 trends you need to know, piping hot and right off the Autumn Winter runway…
1. The Hard Shine Ponytail, Victoria Beckham
Hair god Guido Palau wanted to create a style that echoes Victoria Beckham’s minimal, wearable, tapered fashion. This simple, low ponytail is amped up with what Palau calls ‘jewel texture’, which requires ultra grooming with tools and product.
• Apply base products to damp hair to protect it from heat and groom hair. Redken Pillow Proof Blow, Redken Dry Express Treatment Primer, Redken Satinwear 02 Prepping Blow-Dry Lotion.
• Blow dry stick straight
• Apply Triple Take 32 Extreme High-Hold Hairspray to create hard shine in the front; apply less for softness in the back.
2. The Spiral Cone, Sibling
This fluffy, slept-in look frames the face in a softer, tumbling version of a short fringe. ‘Undone’ is the key – a London street-style looseness to complement Sibling’s daytime-disco knotted lace and palette of lavender and sunshine yellow.
• Apply TONI&GUY Volume Plumping Mousse through towel-dried hair before blow drying to create texture and grip for styling.
• Leaving two lower sections of the hair loose on either side of head, twist the rest towards the crown in a French pleat and secure with pins. Leave the ends of the hair draped across the top of the head to create a fringe.
• Using the loose lengths of hair, cover the French pleat across the back of the head, leaving one small section near the nape.
• With the loose section, create small ringlets using the TONI&GUY Style Fix Curler
• Tease hair with TONI&GUY Creative Style Spray Wax to add definition.
• Finally, spray TONI&GUY Creative Extreme Hold Hairspray
3. The Feather Cut Shag, Alexander Wang
This cool, gritty shape references rebellious 1970s cuts. Think Jane Fonda’s revolutionary shag in Klute (1971) as she kissed her 1960s sex doll look goodbye. The texture is defiantly ‘anti-luminous’, more natural and beachy, with styling that stays rough around the edges.
• Shampoo and condition hair with REDKEN’S Beach Envy Volume Shampoo and Conditioner.
• While hair is still damp, create a messy middle part using your fingers and lightly spray REDKEN Beach Envy Volume Wave Aid on damp hair for big, beachy volume.
• Tuck hair behind the ear on both sides and let hair air-dry naturally for beachy texture
• Once hair is fully dry, lightly spray Redken REDKEN Wax Blast 10 High Impact Finishing Spray-Wax from mid-lengths to ends to create an undone, choppy texture and natural waves.
4. The Soft vs. Structured Bun, Georgine
Based on the primal appeal of good vs. evil and storybook heroines in fairytales, these styles reflect both sides of the feminine coin. So which way do you want to play it – soft pulled back waves or structured, slicked back hair befitting an evil stepsister? Cue the goth lippie…
High Messy Bun
• Apply a coin size amount of Moroccanoil Treatment through damp hair then comb in a deep center part.
• Use a Moroccanoil Boar Bristle Brush to pull hair back into a tight bun and then run fingers around the bun and top of the head to release flyaway pieces to create an undone look.
• Spray flyaways with both Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray and secure with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium.
Tight, Slicked Back, Low Bun
• Apply a dime size amount of Moroccanoil Treatment through the hair to give a luscious shine and smooth finish. Comb in a deep center part.
• Spray hair with Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection Spray to add gloss
• Pull hair back into a tight ponytail and twist to create a woven knot.
• Mist with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray
5. The Loose Beehive, Jeremy Scott
Pop go the 80s as big, bouffant hair adds to the fun at Jeremy Scott’s ‘Cowboys and Poodles’ collection. Wella Global Creative Director of Styling Eugene Souleiman references Vegas, pin-ups, even Barbie – the glam-trash aesthetic that makes the Jeremy Scott world go around. Backcombing is the perfect backdrop for glitter, sequins and retro cartoon prints, with product that creates the porous texture that holds volume best.
• Prep hair using Wella’s EIMI Sugar Lift with EIMI Perfect Setting on the ends. Over-applying the product.
• Dry hair using a large round brush then leave to set in wide rollers before brushing out.
• Apply EIMI Stay Essential hairspray to hold the style and tease the hair for even bigger volume
